1 quote
“He showed up. I’m writing this so other people will too.”
1 idea
Most people think showing up requires the right words. It doesn’t. My father drove me to wrestling tournaments and he drove me to rehab, and I don’t remember a single thing he said in either car. I remember that he was in the car.
We stay away from the hospital room, the funeral, the friend in trouble, because we’re waiting to figure out what to say first. That’s backwards. Presence is the whole thing. The words are optional, and they usually come out wrong anyway — and it still counts.
1 exercise
Think of one person you’ve been meaning to reach out to but haven’t, because you didn’t know what to say.
Send them six words today: “Thinking about you. No need to reply.”
That’s it. Don’t explain, don’t apologize for the delay, don’t ask how they’re doing. Just put yourself in the car.
